Dear Wade Page,
As we raise our children, we instill
in them the sacrifices that make up Sikh history. How our Gurus taught us to defend others and to put humanity in front of all of our
actions. Yesterday, I
had to tell my son about your hate. I had to explain to him how his small
turban may make him the target of unjust hate and as a parent I welcome
that. I welcome that my children get
strength from these challenges in life. I welcome that they question who they are, why
they are, as these are the foundations of
spiritual development. Some may want to
shelter their children from every storm and every challenge. Yet, I owe it to
my forefathers who laid down their lives for our identity, to those who stood
steadfast in the face of any challenge.
My dear misguided friend, you felt
powerful holding a gun,and firing at innocent people. You felt that your mission and your message were
going to clearly resonate and create an environment of fear within us. I can assure you failed badly in this, as the
community you chose to target has seen much worse. The Sikhs have endured even a price on their heads yet they did
not give up their faith, their identity is still intact.
Our message has always been of
tolerance and acceptance. The US government and media failed to allow the Sikhs
to explain their identity, so people like you made us easy targets to direct
hate towards. Our children were bullied,
our community was discriminated against, we were heckled, attacked and even
killed. Yet we did not fold under this pressure. In a decade of constant images,
you and others have made us the face of the enemy, knowing nothing about us,
not knowing the fact that the enemy you just started fighting a decade ago we
had been against since our existence.
The enemy - of hate, of terrorism, of forcing beliefs is what we have
made a living standing against. We
upheld religious freedom, we upheld even those beliefs we did not ourselves
believe in, yet you did not educate yourself of the difference.
We even welcome that, we pride
ourselves of standing in the front lines to absorb hate; this is what our
identity is about. It is not just mistaken identity, whether you
thought we were Muslim or not does not matter to us, as nobody should be the
target of such a crime. Our identity puts us at the forefront of constantly reshaping
our resolve. We do not feel it a burden,
in fact, it is our biggest strength.
Unfortunately, this is not the
first, nor do I think will be the last, attack on Sikhs because we are an easily identifiable minority. Each morning, when a Sikh in the USA has tied
a turban, they have fully known that this distinguishes them from the rest, it
makes them stand out, and it opens the opportunity for ridicule, for hate,
discrimination and bullying. Yet despite all that they continue to wear it. Such is the spirit of the Sikhs
for their article of faith. The turban
is not just a symbol; it is a part of every Sikh that ties them to something
greater, something that connects them to their roots, and their spirituality.
Wade Page you chose the wrong group of people, fear is not in our vocabulary. The fact is that out of all the massacres, nobody tried to attack the shooter, yet in the Sikh massacre even while you had the more powerful weapon, a Sikh tried to stop you.
Sikhs resolve is robust, and though
many in our community try to assimilate to fit in when tragedy strikes, there
are an ample number of those who use this to strengthen their commitments to
their faith.
Aryan nation/KKK/White Supremacist
whoever is out there, we did nothing to deserve this sort of hate, yet it is okay.
You brought the fight to the right group of people; we have defended others against what you stand for throughout our history and will
continue to do so. You want to see fewer turbans? You will only see more now, as this is the
way our psyche works.
Your hate and bigotry is water for
the seeds of our perseverance. We don’t
just pray for the betterment of all; we are willing to back it up with
action. You wanted to break us, to make
us fear, to make us question our identities, my friend you have only done the
opposite.
Wade, wherever you are now, please
do try to find Aurangzeb, and Zakareya Khan and talk to them, discuss with them
how you all have collectively failed to make even a dent on the Sikhs, and
while you are there also let Bin Laden know that his image may have hurt the
turban, but we will never give it up and vow to restore its glory not as a
symbol of fanaticism or hate, but as a symbol of justice, equality and
spirituality.

Well written. And beautiful. I am proud to be married to a Sikh and we have beautiful children together. May God be with all of you during this tragic time.
I grew up in oak creek. I never would have imagined a tragedy like this would happen here. I was saddened and angered by the events. My sikh friends have gone to that temple but were not there at that time. It was not my christian teachings that gave me comfort. It is the strength of the sikh teachings and community. I am honored to know such people, and to be acquainted with such a beautiful world so close to mine. Yet so far away.
Peace will culture peace, hate will beget hate, sikhs are the one religion for everyone to find god and defend tyranny, its a great duality to live in

This was amazing, I have never read a better put together article than this, you said everything and said it well all in this article. Thank you very much. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh.
Wonderfully written. Thank you for sharing your wonderful thoughts.
You have written a powerful article but it is highly unfortunate. You are a proud Sikh, that it obvious but your view is highly ethnocentric.
NOBODY deserves to be killed because of their race/religion and your article hints over and over again to the idea that the Wisconsin shooting was a case of "mistaken identity". So are you implying that the poor souls targeted in the Gurdwara were mistaken for Muslims? How do you know? How do you know that Wade Michael didn't systematically target the Gurdwara and the Sikhs there because he just hates them.
You state; "In a decade of constant images you and others have made us the face of the enemy, knowing nothing about us, not knowing the fact that the enemy you just started fighting a decade ago we had been against since our existence. The enemy of hate of terrorism of forcing beliefs is what we have made a living standing against". What enemy are you fighting? Are you saying to Wade Michael that he made a mistake and that you guys are actually on the same team and equally are fighting the enemy aka Muslims?
You speak of tolerance? what Tolerance?? Aurangzeb happened in 1618! Let it go!
You are perpetuating more hate and racism by bringing Muslims into this when you haven't the slightest clue about WHY Michael even targeted the Gurdwara. And if it happens that it was because of mistaken identity, then it's ok? You're saying "you got the wrong people, go get them?"
Anyone that is complimenting your article should hang their head in shame because hate is not the answer to hate. The way you feel discriminated against, well that is how muslims feel too. Bringing up Aurangzeb is so UNRELATED to the entire tragedy and has no purpose.
The Guru Granth Sahib has many references to the Q'uran and the teachings of Sikhism make many references to the teachings of Islam.
Learn to ACTUALLY embrace the teachings of your religion and move towards peace, tolerance and acceptance, don't scrape age old wounds to further divide and demonize.
well said bhaji
i am a sikh and my decision to ware a turban came from wanting to be different i have never wanted to fit in to a crowed and i am proud to stand out. our history shows that we will never give up stead fast and stand strong.
chardi kala
Well said!
I think you have taken these writings the wrong way and while your argument sounds logical it also misses the larger point. The man who committed these crimes is unfortunately NOT unusual in fact he is entirely cliche and YES, he in all likelihood lumped this community in with his own twisted ideas of the Muslim community. I will not hang my head but rather rejoice in knowing that this article speaks to people and reminds them to stand against up for themselves and their beliefs even if it may put them in the crosshairs of someone like Wade.
This article was about inspiration, perserverance and strength not about hate. No Sikh is saying its ok to kill Muslims but they did feel the need to teach about their own religion and the first step in that was to differentiate the two as majority confused them due similar appearances.
As far auragzeb is concerned, he is part of history that will be forgiven but not forgotten just like page.
A pleasure to have read this wonderful letter - gathered across the world we stand - not against any religion, culture or entity but in recognition of our own unique and valued contribution wherever our sikh families care to roam. Thank you for your words.
Well Said,dear,
Mr.Paze ,Small guns are even smaller before our courage.Mind it.
We never hate any comunity,we have learnt the lesson of brotherhood.
In our daily prayer, every Sikh seeks the blessings of all.
To Anonymous, 2:31 AM:
You misunderstood certain parts of this article.
1. The author NEVER says it is okay to kill Muslims. In fact, he categorically says it is NOT OK to kill Muslims. The author says:
"It is not mistaken, if you thought we were Muslim or you did not does not matter to us, as nobody should be the target of such a crime."
That is the ONLY sentence where the word Muslim occurs, so tell me where he is saying it is okay to kill Muslims?
2. As for the "enemy", again, the article did not mean Muslims. It means any group that spreads terrorism. The authors says:
"In a decade of constant images you and others have made us the face of the enemy, knowing nothing about us, not knowing the fact that the enemy you just started fighting a decade ago we had been against since our existence." Who did America start fighting a decade ago? Are they fighting every Muslim on the planet? NO. American is fighting Taliban, Al Qaeda, and other such groups. They are the enemy.
3. Why should we forget Aurangzeb? When will it be okay for the Jews to forget Hitler? Aurangzeb did not try kill a village. His mission was to wipe out a complete religion. He was the ruler of the nation. Sounds like Hitler to me.
If this were a reading comprehension exam, you'd have got a FAIL. Time to go back to school, for you.
This is an amazing article. Thanks for writing it in such a manner that brings strength to all of us. One of my favorite mentions in the article is
".....you want to see less turbans? You will only see more now, as this is the way our psyche works."
Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh! Sat Sri Akal!
No word to express! Waheguru ji ka Khalsa, Waheguru ji ki Fateh!

Loved this article. Proud to be a Sikh.
Veer Ji since reading this article I have begun to wear my dastaar. You have inspired me to confront society and represent the Sikh Faith . Thank you
well said, have you noticed those who commit these horrific crimes and those who have so much hate for others, are religions that try to convert others into following theirs, im not going to mention them, but you all know which religions they are...

Sunny,
I am very happy its a courageous and commendable step! I have not said anything new, not a single word of that was anything that could inspire anyone to that level. It was just a regurgitated reminder of our history, of how we tackled even the most brutal hatred and came out even stronger!
Good luck to you keep in the Chardi kala spirit and inspire those around you!
wow great read....i do encourage everyone to read this!!! you have put our way of thinking so beautifully.
What a beautiful and inspiring letter. It has taught me so much about your faith and traditions.
This post was so eloquently worded and lacked any form of animosity or criticism that most Sikhs, including myself, must be feeling right now. Your positive take on such an horrifying event is applaudable and empowering. Your words further solidify my values of being a good Sikh and I thank you for re-centering me.
Respectfully & humbly message delivered vaheguru is with us all
dear anonymous 2.31am slama lekam
you remind me writter Lord Huxley who always intentionly misses the goods to find negetives ie his book about Taj Mahal. You my friend, tell me how & why should I forget Aurangzeb when his sole purpose was to wipeout Sikh Generations.Lets be together against the hate & crimes against humanity
you put a bad taste in my mouth by not acknoledging the spirit of letter.I golf with a very nice family man who is muslim What would you say I should not

By bring Aurangzeb into the conversation, the writer is only stating that we have been through this before. It is not trying to demonize Aurangzeb because he was a Muslim but because he was intolerant of Sikhs. Also the enemy is clearly stated as hate and terrorism and not Islam, its just an unfortunate consequence of history that the oppressors of that time was the Mughal empire which was also Islamic. No where in the article does it attack another faith because all Sikhs know that Sikhism has come under attack from all sides. As for letting it go, ask the Palestinians to let go of what happened between them and Israel and you will receive a similar response.
verywell explained . thank you
Good job - this article is very well written. Makes me want to turn Sikh.

You all bring up Aurangzeb as if it has any importance today. What good does rehashing Aurangzeb do? It makes young Sikhs hate Muslims. There are wax statues dedicated to portraying horrific scenes of Sikhs being killed by mughals in India. Weather you want to admit it or not, you and I all know that the story of Aurangzeb provides a rally cry to unite Sikhs. Nobody alive today was directly affected by Aurangzeb. Hitler-yes.
Aurangzeb happened in the early 1600's. Hitler 1940's. Israel/Palestine early 1900's. Your points are all moot. The only purpose Aurangzeb's story in the Sikh culture serves is to show strength courage etc, AND "those horrible Muslims-look what they did to us". For a group of people struggling and demanding equality you sure do sound like hypocrites.
News flash folks, there are over 1.6 BILLION Muslims in the world, and they make up over 23% of the worlds population. If even 0.5% of them a crazy fundamentalists, thats 800,000 ppl.
The point of this article could have been made with just as much power, and strength without the us versus them vibe. You're fooling yourselves if you dont see the "we're fighting a common enemy" message.
"It is not just mistaken identity, whether you thought we were Muslim or not does not matter to us, as nobody should be the target of such a crime."...
youre right... NOBODY deserves to be killed because of their race/religion. HE MAKES THAT PRETTY CLEAR.
This was truly inspiring, I am one out the many Sikhs that don't keep my hair but I know without a doubt I would defend not only a fellow Sikh when time comes but any human, and that is definitely due to the strength kg the sikh power that not only my parents and the Gurus have instilled in me but God as well, and if we all look deep inside we can see we have the power to stand up against this kind of hate. And I am proud of each and everyone of you who stand up to this hate, may Waheguru bless us all!
"It is a mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it." – Aristotle
Thank you VeerJee, for sharing this powerful thought process. Maybe our struggles ahead are great, but our path ahead is clear too. Reading your article gives us strength and a feeling of unity and belongingness to the Panth.
Now response to the "Anonymous at 2:31 6:45PM" above is this...
Sir, you are missing the point entirely...Muslims are not the enemy, not for America, not on that day on September the 11th, and certainly not for the Sikhs. They were never the enemy...its the enemy that calls themselves Muslims, a true Muslim that follow the principals of the Muslim religion will never be a terrorist. I don't see you saying, that Aurangzeb was not a Muslim, his values were not connotative to the Muslim principles...and that nobody should address him as a Muslim, he was a dictator, an oppressor, and a killer...you don't say that. You don't say that the murderers who attacked on 9/11 were not Muslim...you see, the problem is they call themselves Muslim so proudly and loudly, that the Media, the world, and the societies take notice to that. You don't come on TV and say, no this is wrong, they are not Muslim. The burden is on you to come on every platform and say that these terrorists and killers are not Muslim and share with the world what a true Muslim stands for. Same way, Timothy Mcveigh was not a Christian, and neither was Wade Page...
The burden is on you to stop criticizing and stand up and share with the world what a Muslim believes. Your voice should be louder than the propaganda of Bin Laden or Taliban...do you have that courage, Dear Sir???
This article is worth reading for the non-Sikhs to ascertain the philosophy of Sikhism and also to understand that all people bearing turbans are not terrorists and killers. I admire the angle the writer has taken - addressing it to the killer, Mr. Page, and conveying the message of Sikhism. What happened at the Sikh Gurudwara in Wisconsin is indeed a sad story. It was a tragic moment beyond anyone's comprehension. This senseless killing needs to be condemned by all faiths, religions and people belonging to all civilized societies. The outside world cann't share the physical and mental anguish of the bereaved families, but at least can officially and openly evince its empathy for those families. We all pray that Almighty God bless the departed souls and bestow upon the affected families all the strength to bear this unbearable loss. It is true that nothing can be done to bring back those who laid their lives at the Sikhs' shrine for no fault of their own. But the question arises what can be done to avoid re-occurrence of similar incident. The authorities are very well aware of the existence of white supremacist organizations in this country, their mode of training and the locations of training camps. Public televisions show openly how they are trained and with what motive, and one gets an impression that there is like a parallel American military camp in existence. It is true that this country believes in full democratic rights - right to speak, right to worship etc.- but when incident like what happened at the Sikhs Gurudwara in Wisconsin occurs, one wonders if those perpetrators are really taking advantage of liberal democratic rights. One also wonders, especially the affected families, how many more people have to die before these white supremacist camps are shut down and declared as illegal establishments. I will put them in the same category what Al Queda and Talibans are doing - training soldiers to kill people of other religions. The burden is on the shoulders of authorities in Washington - The President, Congress and the Senate - to come out openly and pass legislation against selling and possessing guns, shut down all white supremacist camps and declare them as illegal activities. ARE THE MEMBERS OF AUTHORITY IN WASHINGTON WILLING TO SACRIFICE THEIR LOBBYING DOLLARS AND DO SOMETHING FOR THE HUMANITY DURING THEIR LIFE TIME?
Very well written! I completely agree. I wrote my input on it as well! http://receivethebest.blogspot.com/2012/08/ignorance-is-not-classy-stop-hate.html
Very well said.
Myself as a British Indian " not Sikh nor Hindu" stand by the turban not only for Sikhs but for all Indians
Jai Gurdev....
veer ji you gave a very empowering message. Waheguru mehar kare. Waheguru ji ka Khalsa Waheguru ji ki fateh.
BETA JI, ABOUT AURANGZEB AND ZAKRIA KHAN.PLEASE READ THE HISTORY OF THAT TIME. THEY ONLY STOOD AGAINST TYRANNY NOT BECAUSE THEY WERE SIKHS OR WEARING TURBANS
I have always read your blogs and they have always given me the strength to wake up every morning and tie my turban and the face the bigots, I encounter on daily basis in my country, USA. In my teen years, my only goal in life was go to USA, cut my hair, loose my identity. At that time, I never thought, I will not fall in love with my turban, my sikhi but it happened and you blogs played a big role. You are role model....

YOU INSPIRED LOTS OF PEOPLE YOUNG AND OLD.GOD BLESS.
All those who kill and force others dont belong to any religion...
This is a great article but sounds more Gandhian, emotional and meek and hence does not address the present problem headon. I also agree that no point in dragging Moslems into it as there is no point in scraping old enemity. In fact they are also on the recieving end pretty much like Sikhs.
Whatever happened to the great Sikh psyche?
Guru Gobind Singhji taught us eye for eye!
He inspired us.... saying it is right to unsheath the sword when all means fail.
I am not advocating violence and I dont live in the USA but when the threat is so real and when the US has amazing gun laws, why not replace swords with guns in Gurdwaras?
Why not have sewadars armed with automatic guns to keep vigil ?
Or are the laws specially tailored for only the white people?
Thanks for stating the obvious for the greater world. Each and every word in this is so true...I am proud to be a SIKH in America..today and Everyday
Well-written Veerji.
No matter what the situation might be or might entrain us to do/become, we should always be reminded to follow and abide the teaching of our Gurus in the Shri Guru Granth Sahib. We should live every moment consciously. We shouldn't react to such a tragic incident with weakness or hatred but with courage and a deepened sense of faith, trust and love for our Sikh Gurus and fellow Sikhs worldwide.
Regarding the highlighted debate discussed above in various comments, I would like to suggest that the Author in no way implies his hatred or any hint of condemnation towards any religious/racial group. The reference made to 'muslims' has been misunderstood by some as a certain type negative profiling.
Our Gurus and the Adi Granth has references to various other religious texts/people including Islam. We are an accepting and tolerant faith. We should be open-minded enough to see the big picture rather than arguing on trivial ones with such passion.
I only hope that with true love and inner peace, we should stand against and rebel any form of fear, hatred, tyranny and injustice with love and service towards to the benefit of humankind. Not to forget the older generation(s) should always stand up to inspire the younger generations to do the same.
WaheGuru Ji Ki Khalsa, WaheGuru Ji Ki Fateh!
Well done!!!
Glad to see this is being posted all over Facebook!!!!
Wahe Guru Ji gives us the strength and will always be with the rightous!
well said, alot of people are ignorant to sikh people, even to other cultures, this is a prime example of ignorant society we live in!!!
An excellent articulation of true Sikhs emotions via beautifully chosen words. We could not be thankful enough to the writer for bringing home the key message about Sikh identity, chardi Kala and sacrifices Sikhs made. The individual who made some less than honorable comments about this article failed to get the true essence of what writer was saying and therefore, should be ignored. Kudos to the esteemed writer not only for sending the message of Chardi Kala but the way he has delivered it.
Your article is very good and thought provoking. It is emotionally charged without conveying the message that hate against anybody is bad, intolerable and against the principles of sikhism. That is what our guru,s taught us. You created the impression that it is o.k to kill muslims and not sikhs. That is not right, because our ardas ends with tere bhane sabh da bhalla.
Lets reply it positively by making our identity more visual through more turbans around there. Request to all those who have given up the turbans to come up and support your community and not let such sacrifices go waste.
Lets take forward the legacy of our Holy Guru Sahib jis by wearing Sikh bana properly and keep our hair intact which is the blessing of our Guru Sahib.
Salute to all those who sacrificed their life.
May waheguru ji give all the courage to the community to fight such challenges and bless all with gursikhi jeevan
Excellent piece of writing. It sums up many of our thoughts. I have read this article many times and there has not been even one occasion that it has not brought tears to my eyes. Tears of sadness that even now Sikhs are discriminated against but more tears of love whilst contemplating that for so many Sikhs the love for their Guru is much more valuable than their life. It uplifts my thoughts and strengthens my resolve to be a better Sikh and follow the Guru's teaching completely.
Nobody knows or cares where the remains of Wade Michael Page are. Page is a distant cousin of 9/11 hero, Welles Remy Crowther!
great article veerji..it really makes me more conscious that such attacks have been our history..and more might come in future..but it wont let us leave our faith and upholding righteousness and it really works that way.thats true...i got baptised after learning about events of 1984 and attack on sikhs by indian govt...they tried to kill us..scare us...but look what have they done..there attack made me a better sikh actually...
Remember Satwant Singh Kaleka, a hero and a legend. The truth about the body of Wade Michael Page, nobody knows or cares about his remains and Page might be buried in an unmarked grave or be cremated. Kaleka was cremated per request. Amardeep forgave the gunman and the gunman never asked for forgiveness. Kaleka was cremated per custom.
This post gives the light in which we can observe the reality. This is very nice one and gives indepth information. Thanks for sharing this nice article. cremation
There are others who forgave the gunman:
Amarjit Kaur
Gurmit Singh Kaleka
Gurjeet Singh Kaleka
And the rest of the Oak Creek Sikhs, too many to mention.
Virtually all Sikhs in Oak Creek forgave the gunman.
